With its basic rural setting, Roane County creates a paradise with modern, yet pollution free living opportunities, whether it be in the outlying communities of Reedy, Walton and Tariff or right in the City of Spencer, which serves as the business "hub" and county seat.
Located just 50 miles north of Charleston, 45 miles southeast of Parkersburg and 92 miles south of Clarksburg, Spencer offers the convenience of nearby urban centers with the charm of country living. The unspoiled nature included in this area sets the pace for close family life coupled with a prosperous business community.
Charles Fork is a multi-use area with over 20 miles of trails surrounding a 200-acre lake that sports excellent fishing, canoeing and hiking. The trails were developed by local mountain bike enthusiasts and are one of the most beautiful venues in the East. The mostly single-track trail system offers a rewarding experience for all levels of mountain bikers.
Spencer has developed several athletic fields,a fine city swimming pool, golf courses and many outstanding programs for public recreation.
In addition, this is also the site of the annual Black Walnut Festival, a four-day celebration that is highlighted by such traditional country events as livestock exhibits, lumberjacking and firefighting contests, arts and crafts shows, a grand parade and much more. Other events include Spring/Summerfest.
People and products move smoothly throughout the region, thanks to an efficient transportation network that includes the airport, the second largest tonnage port on the Ohio River, and an interstate highway system that conveniently links the area to major markets.
Spencer is served by the Roane County schools. Family Health Care Clinic provides care in all ranges of family practice including, but not limited to, obstetrics, pediatrics and geriatrics. Miletree Health Care Center is a 60-bed licensed professional intermediate nursing facility.
